Soon, Greensburg City residents can help plan their city’s future at SHAPE GREENSBURG neighborhood workshops to be held this spring. At the workshops, residents will be asked to identify things they like about neighborhoods and things they think could be improved. Feedback collected will feed future workshops and be woven into the update of the City’s 14-year-old Comprehensive Plan.
Scheduled for adoption in December, the new Plan will outline the overall goals and direction for the city for the next 10 to 15 years, voicing a community’s vision for land development, parks and recreation, housing, mobility, public infrastructure, blight mitigation and more.
“Our goal is to listen to as many people as possible,” says Plan Coordinator Michael Norcini, who is working with a volunteer steering committee and the Pittsburgh-based consulting firm Environment Planning and Design. “Greensburg has strong, vibrant neighborhoods, so it made sense to start shaping a plan that will serve our entire city at the grassroots.”
For the workshops, the city’s more than 20 neighborhoods have been grouped into five Neighborhood Planning Areas: Central, East, North, North Central and West. The first round of workshops will take place Saturday, March 5, Tuesday, March 8, and Wednesday, March 9, at various times and public locations in each of the five Planning Areas. The focus of the March workshops will be: “What makes our neighborhoods great and where are we struggling?” The second and third rounds, planned for April and May, will focus on “What will make our neighborhoods better?” and “What can we do now?”
Residents may attend workshops in their own neighborhoods or other neighborhoods. In addition to the three rounds of neighborhood workshops, informal roundtables are being scheduled with the business, university, and arts communities.
