The 32nd Annual Greensburg Turkey Trot is only a few days away, and there are some reminders for participants and spectators of the area’s largest Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, scheduled for this Thursday, Nov. 23:

  • The starting line will be at the traditional location in front of the courthouse at the intersection of W. Pittsburgh Street and Main Street.  The race begins at 9 a.m.
  • Pre-race registration and shirt pick-up will be held only ONE day at the Greensburg YMCA Wednesday, Nov. 22 from noon-6 p.m.   Thursday morning registration and shirt pick-up will be at the Westmoreland County Courthouse plaza, 2 N. Main Street, from 7-8:30 a.m.
  • Recommended parking for the event are all the public garages, especially the Bell Garage, located on W. Otterman St., below the courthouse.  On-street parking is
first-come, first-served.  Parking is free for the day.
  • The finish line is on S. Pennsylvania Avenue, behind the courthouse.

The annual Greensburg Turkey Trot was created 32 years ago by five friends who ran every day at lunch.  The race has grown each year, and according to Mark Sorice, race committee chairman and one of the founders of the event, expects another large turnout.  More than 2,000 runners/walkers participate each year.

This year’s honorary starter is Dr. Caleb Bupp, a Greensburg native whose father (Dr. Barry Bupp) is one of the founders of the race.  Caleb is a distinguished medical geneticist, who co-discovered a rare genetic disease and related disorders in children—and subsequent cure—for the Bachmann-Bupp Syndrome, which symptoms include complete hair loss, an enlarged head, low muscle tone and developmental delays

“We are extremely honored to have Caleb serve as the honorary starter,” said Sorice.   “The Bupp family’s involvement in this race is profound, and to honor Caleb for his elite contributions to the medical field, It is only appropriate he receives this designation for this event in which his family is so connected.  It will be quite a festive environment to kick off the holiday season.”

Awards will be presented to the top three overall male and female runners and walkers; and the top three overall Clydesdale runners. In addition to individuals, racing is open for unlimited family, high school and corporate team members, who can register as a group in either the run or walk category. The top three times will be averaged to determine the winner of the Bupp Family Cup, and High School and Corporate Cup trophies.
