City of Greensburg Rec Department announces Spring and Summer Programs

Spring is here and summer is quickly approaching! The City of Greensburg Recreation Department has so many awesome activities and programs planned for all ages! From movie nights, to summer day camps, backyard games and adult kickball and happy hours, there’s going to be so much to do! Registration is open for all of the activities, so mark your calendars and sign up now!

Speed & Agility

Open to children in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade, this program is suitable for ALL athletes, regardless of skill level! The program will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5pm to 6pm at Lynch Field, from May 3rd through May 26th. Each session will include a general, group-based warm-up and cool down. All participants will be divided into groups after the warm-up, and then will rotate through 3 to 4 stations of varying activities. Some activities may include relay races, tire flipping, cone drills, and much more! After the hour of stations, any football players who would like to stay after can do so to work on football-specific skills and drills with the coaches. Cost of the program is $10 for Greensburg Salem School District Residents and $15 for Non-Residents. Registration ends on May 3rd

Community Backyard Games

This free program is open to all ages, and no pre-registration is required! Spanning 5 Fridays from May 7 through June 4, kids can meet up at Lynch Field to play traditional groups games. We will play Hide ‘N Seek Tag on week 1, and Red Rover on week 2. Week 3 will be Cops and Robber and week 4 will be Ship and Sailors. We will finish up on week 5 with Water Balloon Wars! Children are not required to wear a mask while playing, but definitely can if they would like! Social distancing and COVID regulations will be observed by spacing out the playing field, providing sanitizing wipes for equipment and hand sanitizer for each player’s use, and by using equipment, like pool noodles, to avoid contact between players! 

Youth Spring & Summer Kickball

Open to children ages 12 and under! This program will have 3 different sessions: the Spring session will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at Lynch Field, running May 4th through May 25th. Summer session 1 will be on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 6:30 to 7:30pm and Summer session 2 will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30pm, both of these will run July 6th through July 29th. Participants just show up for a full hour of kickball each daily session – no equipment required! Player captains will be chosen to pick teams each week, and both teams will face off in a fun game of kickball! No score will be kept, and we will follow the traditional rules of play. Do not worry if your player does not know how to play – we will teach them as we go! This is a great introductory program to the wide world of sports, and we try our absolute best to teach each player good sportsmanship and to keep the game as much fun as possible! Cost of this program is $15 for Greensburg Salem School District Residents and $20 for Non-Residents. Registration closes before the first day of each session.  

Summer Kickball for High School Aged Kids

Open to ages 13-18; this program will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:30pm, running June 8 thought July 1. All games will be played at Lynch Field. Participants just show up for a full hour of kickball each daily session – no equipment required! Player captains will be chosen to pick teams each week, and both teams will face off in a fun game of kickball! No score will be kept, and we will follow the traditional rules of play. Do not worry if your player does not know how to play – we will teach them as we go! Cost of this program is $15 for Greensburg Salem School District Residents and $20 for Non-Residents. Registration closes before the first day of each session.  

Adult Kickball & Happy Hour

Open to adults aged 21+; this program will be on Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30pm, running June 11 through July 30. All games will be played at Lynch Field. Participants just show up for a full hour of kickball each daily session – no equipment required! After an hour of kickball play, we will travel to a local bar, restaurant, brewery, etc. So far, we have planned trips to Badges Bar & Grille, Major Stokes, All Saints Brewing Company, and Mr. Toad’s, with more to come! Cost of this program is $20 for Greensburg Salem School District Residents and $25 for Non-Residents. Registration closes before the first day of each session.  

Summer Day Camp

Open to kids ages 7-12 for a 9am to 3:30pm day camp, Monday through Friday. $120 for residents, $130 for non-residents. Each week has a different theme that guides the types of outdoor and indoor recreation activities, and enrichment (STEAM classroom) activities to we do! We are collaborating up with the Greensburg Hempfield Library to include use of library books, activities, technology, and planned visits to St. Clair Park. In addition, we have planned visits by Excela Health to provide nutrition presentations to our camp kiddos! Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be provided courtesy of the Westmoreland County Food Bank’s Summer Meal Program!

Movies will begin at dusk each showing. Some seating is available, but you are welcome to bring your own chair, picnic blanket, etc. to stay comfortable! Kona Ice will be joining us each showing, and Pit Take BBQ Food truck will be with us for the July showings! $5 donation per person is requested, but not required. Community Movies inside the Kirk S. Nevin Arena

Join us for a movie inside the Kirk S. Nevin Arena! Ever wonder what it’s like in the rink without ice? Well now, you can find out, and watch a movie!

June 6 – Sonic the Hedgehog

July 11 – Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
July 25 – Onward

Doors will open at 1:30PM. Please bring your own chair, blanket, etc. Whatever works for you! Bagged popcorn will be available for purchase! $5 donation per person is requested, but not required.

Youth Dodgeball

Kids 12 and under can play in the Kirk S. Nevin Arena (during off-season) against their peers in a traditional game of dodgeball. This program will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5 to 6pm, from June 7 through July 14. Cost of the program is $15 for Residents, $20 for Non-Residents.

Baseball Tots

Open to kids ages 2 to 4 years old, this program is a perfect way to introduce your player to the world of baseball! This program will be on Saturdays from 2 to 3pm, running May 8 through June 26th. Various stations will be set up for players to rotate through and practice their baseball skills. T-shirt and ball cap will be included. Cost of the program is $35 for residents and $45 for non-residents. 

Kindersports

Open to ages 6 and under with the help of their parents, this “mommy & me” program includes free recreation time, a guided recreation activity, a snack with story time, and a craft. Cost of the program is $20 for Residents, $30 for Non-Residents.

Wiffleball

Open to ages 12 and under, teams will be established each session for kids to face off in a traditional wiffle ball game. This program will be on Tuesdays and Thursday from 5 to 6pm at Lynch Baseball Field 1.  The cost of the program is $15 for residents, $20 for non-residents.

Hiking Club

Open to all ages! $10 for Residents, $15 for Non-residents; this hiking groups meets on Saturday mornings at 9am beginning June 12 through July 10. We will meet at various trails through Westmoreland County for a 2 to 4 mile hike each week! Trails include Five Star Trail, Westmoreland Heritage Trail, Coal & Coke Trail, Little Crabtree Creek Trail, and the trail at Add Rudd Saxman Natura Park. 

Cheerleading

Open to kids in grades K-8. Currently a part of the Western Pennsylvania Youth Football League. $40 for Residents, only open to GSSD students. Teams include Pep Squad (Grades K-1), Division 3 (grades 2-3), Division 2 (grades 4-5), and Division 3 (grades 6-8).

Football

Opens to kids in grades K-6; $65 for residents; only open to GSSD students. Tackle football teams: Division 3 (grades K-2), Division 2 (Grades 3-4), and Division 1 (Grades 5-6). Currently a member of the Western Pennsylvania Youth Football League in Class AA Eastern Conference against Derry, Yough, Laurel Highlands, Mount Pleasant, Southmoreland, and Uniontown. 

Boys’ Basketball Camp

GSHS’s Coach Zahorchak and his basketball staff will lead this camp for boys in grades 3 through 8 at the GSHS gymnasium. Running from June 10 – 14, Grades 3-5 will play from 11am to 12:30pm, while grades 6-8 will play from 1pm to 2:30pm. $50 for Residents, $60 for Non-Residents.

Summer Job Opportunities

We are currently recruiting for Recreation Aides (Camp Counselors) to help with our Summer Day Camp. Part-time, seasonal position that pays $8.25 per hour. Camp Counselors will be in charge of running Summer Day Camp for kids ages 7-12 years old. The camp will run June 7 through July 16, Monday through Friday, 9AM to 3:30PM. Camp Counselors will be in charge of classroom activities, recreation activities, and taking camp kids to St. Clair Park, Veteran’s Memorial Pool, and other places around the City of Greensburg. Typical workday would be from 8:30AM to 4PM, Monday through Friday.

Parents and guardians may register participants and players by calling the City of Greensburg Recreation Department at (724) 834-4880, stopping in to the Recreation Office inside the Kirk S. Nevin Arena, or by going online to Online Payments | Greensburg PA

Currently, the Recreation Office is open Monday through Friday, from 8AM to 4PM.
