49th Annual Luminary Night to bring old and new traditions

500 luminaries will line the streets of downtown Greensburg this Thursday, December 6, from 5-9pm in celebration of the 49th annual Luminary Night.

Combining old traditions and bringing in new ideas, this year’s Luminary Night is revamped with more activities throughout the evening. A Christmas Tree, donated by TK Property Management and Kattan Ferretti Financial, is located in the parklet on S. PA Ave for the community to enjoy, take photos in front of and hang ornaments on.

“This year, we’ve been lucky enough to help out and bring some new ideas to a long standing Greensburg event,” said Jessica Hickey, director of the Downtown Greensburg Project. “We really wanted this to be an evening of holiday magic and community so we’ve brought some fun new activities, things to do and a Christmas tree in the S. PA Parklet.”

New activities include three locations to make your own ornament and take it when you’re finished, in hopes that you will hang it on the tree. Stop by Serenity Bead Shop on S. Main St, The Incubators for the Arts on N. Main St or The Palace Theatre Courtyard to make an ornament. All make and take ornaments are first come first make as long as there are supplies available.

There will be a Luminary Night photo booth, sponsored and provided by Moxie Events at The Palace Theatre Courtyard where attendees can take fun holiday photos and receive it via text to share on their social media.  Stop by Letters to Santa writing station, located in the courtyard, where children from 1 to 100 can write their wishes to the man in the big red suit before dropping it off in the Letters to Santa mail box at the S. PA Ave Parklet. Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and candy canes while listening to seasonal stories during Holiday Story Time!

In the Incubator for the Arts at 108 North Main Street you’ll be able to make a fun button ornament in a tree or snowman shape! *restrooms will be available here*

After picking out the perfect gift at one of the many shops and boutiques, head to DV8 Espresso Bar and Gallery to get your items wrapped. All gift wrapping donations will benefit Hospaws, a local organization to help those in need of pet services in the event they can’t care for them. The Westmoreland Cultural Trust will also be collecting art supplies, journals, music and books at the Incubator for the Arts, all donations will be distributed to organizations in need, these items can be dropped off at the Palace courtyard

Though there are new activities this year, many long standing traditional activities will be included.

The Greensburg Hempfield Area Library is a location for a few different events. Horse and carriage rides, sponsored by the City of Greensburg, will start and end in front of the library from 6-8pm. While you wait in line, let the kids explore Winter Wonderland in the library basement from 5:30-7:30pm where they can walk down candy cane lane, make a craft, have a cookie and visit Santa!

While strolling through town, stop by the courthouse where the annual Live Nativity Scene put on by the Christian Leaders Mentoring will be set up. They will have several dance groups, singers and free raffles, along with free hot cocoa & cookies.

It wouldn’t be Luminary Night without some music! In front of The Palace Theatre there will be a Sing Along Christmas Caroling with Stage Right, Acoustic Christmas Music with Lea Wesoloski and more from 5-8pm. Plus, Stage Right will be bringing all your holiday favorites from 7:30-8:00pm at the Zion Lutheran Church on S. PA Ave.

Luminaries will be lit along Main Street from The Westmoreland Museum of American Art to City Hall, along S. PA Avenue from the intersection of Otterman to the Greensburg Hempfield Area Library, and portions of 2nd Street, Otterman, Pittsburgh plus the Art in the Alley will be sparkling with luminaries.

Stop by for a bite to eat or a drink at Oliver’s Pourhouse, it’s wing night and they have $2 Yeunglings! Or, snag a cocktail at Rialto for their Christmas Pop-Up and Winter Drink Menu where $1 of each drink from that menu benefits The Animal Friends of Westmoreland. Looking for craft beer? Hugo’s Taproom is having a free tasting of soon to be downtown Greensburg brewery, Invisible Man Brewing’s Christmas Beer, Yule Lads!
