Frontier Court Living History

June 15 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Step back in time to when Hanna’s Town hosted the first English courts west of the Allegheny Mountains. Join us for reenactments of actual cases heard at Hanna’s Town between 1773 and 1786 along with military encampments, living history demonstrations and displays, activities for children, live music, food, and more!

Experience the excitement of the people of the 18th century when they gathered in town for court. See how those who were accused of crimes defended themselves. Learn how the convicted paid their debt to society on the Pennsylvania frontier. Court reenactments will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Several activities are new this year. Guests can experience a demonstration at the Liberty Tree at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Special attention will explore the role of women on the frontier and their contributions to the American Revolution. One of Lord Cornwallis’s officers acknowledged to the British general, “We may destroy all the men in America, and we shall still have all we can do to defeat the women.” A series of signs will be debuted that highlight twelve women who represent various roles females played during the Revolution. One of those roles was ‘spy,’ and willing children may be given a secret message to pass on to one of the spies!

Additionally, the event includes military drills and artillery demonstrations by Revolutionary War era militia and military groups; 18th century trade and skill demonstrations such as blacksmithing. Guests can also see the hard work involved with household chores in the 18th century, from candle dipping to soap making and laundry. Children can play 18th century toys and games and even try on the clothing styles of the period!

Throughout the day, enjoy traditional Scots Irish and Celtic music. See the exhibit in the Kendra Gallery, “Westmoreland 250! Telling Our Story with 25 Objects.” Visit the log houses where our 18th century predecessors lived, worked, and played. Browse the Museum Shop for history-inspired books, ceramics, and 18th century toys, as well as popular food items of the period, such as jams, teas, local honey, and biscuit mixes. Find Westmoreland County’s 1775 flag in various sizes.
